“The Great Indian Migration: Exploring Opportunities for Blue-Collar, Grey-Collar, Pink-Collar and White-Collar Workers Abroad and Government Initiatives to Support Them”

India is currently experiencing a great migration of its workforce, both blue-collar and white-collar. A recently published report showed that the number of Indians working abroad has nearly quadrupled in the last two decades. For many, taking the leap of faith to migrate abroad for work presents with it a plethora of opportunities to further one’s career and explore new avenues of growth. However, when it comes to the grey-collar and pink-collar workers, such as domestic help and service staff, there are few opportunities to take advantage of. Given the current challenging economic environment in India, these workers find themselves particularly vulnerable and unable to access available resources for finding work abroad. The situation is made worse by often archaic labour laws in destination countries which do not recognize qualifications or experience beyond their own borders thus making them ineligible for certain jobs. In light of this issue, the Government of India has taken proactive steps to support these migrant workers who are disproportionately affected by global economic shifts. The government has developed schemes such as Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Suraksha Yojana (MGPSY) which provides insurance coverage for overseas Indian workers and encourages formal employment contracts between domestic workers and employers abroad. The government has also set up centers dedicated solely to migrants’ welfare – both pre-departure and post-arrival – in order to ensure they receive timely assistance while settling into their new lives abroad. It runs various skill development programs aimed at equipping them with necessary knowledge and skills before they embark on their journey. Ultimately, it is important for all stakeholders involved – governments, non-profits, employers – to come together in providing equal opportunities for all classes of people migrating from India so that everyone can benefit from this shift in workforce dynamics. #GreatIndianMigration #BlueCollarWorkers #GreyCollarWorkers #PinkCollarWorkers #WhiteCollarWorkers #GovernmentInitiatives
